The Hobbit sets record weekend at the box office

As if we didn't see it coming, the debut weekend for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings prequel made a gigantic dent in the weekend box office, although the Hobbits didn't quite live up to their projections.

Top 10

Find out what topped the charts this weekend!

1

The Hobbit

Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Gollum and all the dwarves may have had An Unexpected Journey, but we all expected they'd pull in some major numbers at the weekend box office. The latest installment of the Lord of the Rings saga earned a record-breaking $85 million in its first three days, blowing the previous top spot, I Am Legend, well out of the water by some $8 million. Surely a celebratory affair, although predictions had been cast that the Middle Earth gang would earn some $100 million in its opening days. We're pretty sure the flick will easily surpass its $250 million production costs in no time at all.

2

Rise of the Guardians

Just in time for the holidays, Rise of the Guardians climbed to the No. 2 spot with some $7.5 million in weekend earnings. The film follows the magic and mystery of folklore as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost fight back against the foes threatening their favorite kids all over the world. Rise of the Guardians features the voices of Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin and more, and is fun for the whole family!

3

Lincoln

Lincoln came in at No. 3, just shy of Rise of the Guardians, with $7.2 million. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Abraham Lincoln in this great biopic.

4

Skyfall

Skyfall's still swinging in the ring at the No. 4 spot. Daniel Craig and crew managed $7 million, proving yet again that Bond never goes down without a fight.

5

Life of Pi

The epic survival adventure Life of Pi— based on the 2001 Yann Martel novel — held down the No. 5 spot, reeling in $5.4 million. The movie is a great fit for anyone looking for some reflection or spiritual consideration.

6

Breaking Dawn — Part 2

Breaking Dawn — Part 2 is on the downward swing, as it moved to No. 6 this weekend. The film is the epic conclusion to The Twilight Saga, and stars Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson and more.

7

Wreck-It Ralph

Disney's Wreck-It Ralph continues to make the top 10. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman move the comedy along, exploring the animated video game world on a mission to discover what it truly means to be good guys.

8

Playing for Keeps

Gerard Butler and Playing for Keeps hasn't panned out quite how the team hoped. Butler plays a soccer star taking a step back to rekindle relationships with his son and ex-wife, but the numbers just aren't adding up: Playing for Keeps only scored $3.2 million. Maybe Butler should keep to the action flicks.

9

Red Dawn

Red Dawn came it at No.9, with $2.3 million, starring Chris Hemsworth and his crew of small-town American teens holding down the fort against a homeland invasion.

10

Silver Linings Playbook

The romcom, novel-inspired Silver Linings Playbook rounded up the list at No. 10 with $2.8 million. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and more and explores the challenges of a bipolar love story.

Teaser: Star Trek Into Darkness>>

Star Trek Into Darkness reunites Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as they face their biggest foe yet. British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the mysterious John Harrison. As you can see in the above photo, he's not on the Captain's good side.

Britain's Sherlock cast as new Star Trek villain>>

The studio has been tight-lipped about the true nature of Harrison. Fans have speculated that he might be Khan in disguise, but Cumberbatch and Abrams have assured us he's not. What we do know is that he's a very bad man.

In the new trailer he utters the chilling words, "You think you are safe. You are not." The video showcases plenty of footage laced with destruction. It gives the title Into Darkness a whole new meaning.

Leonardo DiCaprio injured on set, kept filming

While playing a villain in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Leo sliced his hand open but never yelled, "Cut." Read more about his dramatic and controversial new role!

This is why he's an award-winning actor: Leonardo DiCaprio cut his hand open so badly that it required stitches on the set of Django Unchained, but never yelled, "Cut," to attend to his bloody injury.

In an intense scene with co-star Samuel L. Jackson, Leo pounds a table, where a shot glass is sitting. "But what happened was the shot glass somehow slid over underneath where he was always slamming his hand down. And in one take, he slams his hand down and the shot glass goes through his hand," co-star Jamie Foxx explained during the press conference for Quentin Tarantino's newest movie in NYC. "And now blood is shooting out [of] his hand and I'm like 'Does everyone else see this? This is crazy!' and he keeps going. And I almost turned into a girl looking at it! But what was amazing is he was so into his character that even when they finally said 'Cut,' he was still this guy... people almost gave him a mini ovation. It was amazing to see that."

Playing Calvin Candie — the evil plantation and slave owner in Tarantino's movie — was a real departure for DiCaprio, who's well-known for playing hunky heroes. "There was absolutely nothing about this man I could identify with," Leo told reporters, "I hated him and it was the one of the most narcissistic, self-indulgent, racist, horrible characters I've read in my entire life... and I had to play him. It was too good of a character not to do, in that sense."

Leo said the cast, which includes Kerry Washington and Christoph Waltz, helped support one another throughout shooting the most brutal scenes. "It honestly felt like we were cheerleaders for one another," he shared, "Like 'Damn, that sh*t was good. Keep going! Be even worse to me the next day.'"

Jamie Foxx, in the title role of Django, personally pitched himself for the project and had no qualms about playing a slave. "I wasn't asked to play [the part]," he shared, "I actually saw that the movie was already going and someone else was supposed to play it and I thought 'Wow, here's another project I haven't heard about'. And actually I had a management change and my acting hustle was like, 'First of all, I don't care what it is. It's Quentin Tarantino and all these people on this stage and I feel that the people here on this stage can tackle absolutely any subject matter'."

Jamie, who's on horseback throughout much of the movie, landed his horse Cheetah a role in the film too. "I got a horse about five or six years ago for my birthday... my horse is actually in the film," he told us. "And what's interesting about my horse and Django is they sort of learned together. As my horse is learning tricks, Django is sort of evolving as a person and a superhero all the way until the end of the movie. The only thing that was scary was riding bareback!"

Despite the sensitive subject matter of slavery, the all-star cast turned in a stellar performance and said they all feel grateful to be a part of Tarantino's latest movie, which hits theaters Dec. 25. "We're all lucky bastards up here," Leo said. "I love acting. It's what I always wanted to do my entire life and I hope to continue doing this for a long time to come. It's the greatest job in the world."

Michael Bay debunks Transformers 4 leak

Michael Bay's setting the record straight: There's no way the next chapter of Transformers has slipped out to sources yet.

With anticipation soaring as high as Starscream, it's easy to understand why some people latched onto the news of an alleged Transformers 4 script leak earlier today. The news was blasting through websites left and right but Michael Bay stepped in to clarify.

We almost wish he hadn't... Paramount issued this statement from Bay to make sure our imaginations didn't run too far.

"Some Internet sites this morning reported that some document recovery guy has found a legitimate 120 page script of Transformers 4. I can absolutely 100 percent say this is completely false. The only two people in the world that have our unfinished script are Kruger and myself. Also we are only up to page 70 in our T4 script. Maybe this guy has a cartoon or something else – but definitely not our movie!"

So what if we don't know what twists and turns the Autobots will get themselves into next? It doesn't change the fact we do knowMark Wahlberg is starring in the fourth installment.

And hey — if they're only up to page 70 — perhaps there's still time to squeeze Megan Fox back into the plot.

Transformers 4 is set to hit theaters June 27, 2014 so be sure to check back at SheKnows for all the exciting news leading up to the big date like this artwork and more!

Vegan Anne Hathaway endured fishy Les Mis situation

Les Miserables was a miserable experience for Anne Hathaway, at least when it came time to film scenes down by the docks. Turns out poor Fantine wasn't ever afforded the chance to live a vegan lifestyle!

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway can relate to her Les Miserables character Fantine in a way she'd probably care not to. Just as the struggling factory worker famously was forced to compromise her moral standings to provide for her child, the actress was put in a highly uncomfortable situation during filming.

Since adopting a vegan lifestyle shortly after filming The Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway has sworn off the use of all animal products — be it wearing, eating or even stepping on the carcass of any animal that was once alive!

Les Miserables director Tom Hooper and the production team were able to work around some of the star's demands for Fantine, but others they either couldn't or simply chose not to.

Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman transform themselves for Les Mis>>

While the wardrobe department did manage to find Anne Hathaway faux leather shoes, the smell of the docks in 19th century France turned out to be the real deal.

The newlywed actress explained, "For some reason, for the dock scenes, wanted us to have dead fish, for days, and days and days on end and of course this was the first role that I've done since going vegan, so there I am in period-looking pleather shoes, stepping on dead fish, and I was having a real crisis of conscience."

Anne Hathaway wears bondage-inspired vegan boots>>

Commiserating over the unholy smell was Anne Hathaway's costar, the one and only Inspector Javert, played by Russell Crowe.

Expressing thanks for how he lightened the mood, the actress shared, "Russell came in... and he just reacted like, 'What is this fetid air?' It's hilarious."

Guilt Trip wrong car

The Guilt Trip exclusive clip feat. Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand

Chemistry is an understatement. Babs and Rogen have got us convinced they've lived together for years, dancing to the fine tune of motherly love and all it entails — namely, some snacks for the road.

The two are hitting the highway for a cross-country adventure in the The Guilt Trip, rolling into theaters everywhere tomorrow. The movie is a hilarious exploration into the mother-son relationship and the struggles of a young man desperately trying to gently outgrow the eternal hand of a helicopter mom.

Rogen's on a mission to make a name for himself but when Babs catches wind of his upcoming business endeavors, she can't resist squeezing her way into the agenda — and the passenger seat. Like any good son, Rogen doesn't have the heart to leave her out of the equation, though he constantly finds himself shaking his head at all the embarrassing moments that follow.

From parking lot mishaps to board room blunders, this hysterical duo keeps it real throughout the whole film.

His mom may be a cook, but Rogen loves her all the more for her everlasting support and comedic relief. Yeah, she may be getting into the wrong car from time to time, but that doesn't change the fact she's his biggest fan and when he loses the drive on his big dreams, he's thankful to have her there to kick him back into gear.

Bab's lil' boy is becoming a man and we're happy to watch it all unfold.

Keep the laughter rolling and check out The Guilt Trip, in theaters Dec. 19!

Our favorite blue friends are back with a larger-than-life adventure for the whole family. But will going naughty put the fate of all Smurfs in danger? Check out the brand-new trailer below!
THE SMURFS 2 First Look Trailer

In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world\'s greatest sorcerer. It\'s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus -- or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

The evil wizard Gargamel will stop at nothing to capture the Smurfs once and for all. This time he's cooked up a whole new recipe to lure them over and as with all evil plans, it starts with being naughty.

Leave it to a kooky sorcerer to come up with a less-than-creative name for his goofy batch of minions. They're "The Naughties" and you guessed it, they're on a mission to turn our little blue friends over to the naughty side of things. They're big trouble wrapped in a small package, from the look of things.

As the trailer implies, Gargamel begins by targeting Smurfette . He believes that he can sway her and get the whole Smurf gang to follow suit.

When Smurfette's kidnapped, it's up to her family and the help of her human friends, like Neil Patrick Harris, to band together and save her from the clutches of Gargamel.

The Smurfs 2 is set to hit theaters July 31, 2013 and if it's anything like its predecessor, it'll be safe for all your Smurfs at home!

The film also features vibrant voices from Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Alan Cumming and more!

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen talk about their roles as a mother-son duo in The Guilt Trip with SheKnows correspondent Whitney English and her own mom!

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, The Guilt Trip

The last person you'd probably expect to star in a movie with risque comedian Seth Rogen is the prim and proper Barbra Streisand. But these two balanced each other perfectly in their new film The Guilt Trip, even falling into their mother-son roles off-camera.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen talk The Guilt Trip

SheKnows correspondent Whitney English and her mom Patti chat with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen about The Guilt Trip.

To promote the film, the duo chatted with SheKnows' own mother-daughter pair, me and my mom, Patti English. It was easy to see instantly that Barbra had developed a type of maternal bond with her co-star Rogen, giving him her seal of approval on his new haircut.

"I always loved to fix [his hair]," said Barbra of her on-set mommying of Seth. "I just cut my hair without telling her I was going to," Seth joked in return. "I love it. I saw it last week and I admired it," Barbra praised.

As a mother to her 45-year-old son Jason, Barbra has a lot of experience dealing with a growing young man. She told us that she and Jason are so close that she only did this movie after he signed off on it.

"The biggest point of me accepting the movie role was reading it with my son," she told us. "He was recovering from back surgery and we were in his bed reading it. When he gave me the 'ups' that he liked it, I did it."

In the movie, Seth plays Andy, a young man trying to sell a product he's developed by taking meetings across the country. Streisand plays his mother, Joyce, who comes along for the ride. The entire trip, the two deal with the classic parent-child dilemma of "mother knows best."

"I think when you're around your parents and you're in your 30s or late 20s you revert back to a teenage version of yourself," Seth admitted. "I find myself being short with them, and not treating them with respect. It's hard not to do."

Barbra acknowledged that she, too, played the opposite with her own son growing up.

"That's the nature of relationships with your children," said Streisand. "We think we know better. Children have to find out for themselves. Your mother could tell you everything. That is the moral of the story, Mother is always right."

I know my mom certainly agrees with her, and I usually end up agreeing as well!

Be sure to catch The Guilt Trip with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen in theaters today... and bring your mom!

The Guilt Trip movie review: The comedic duo of the year

$

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen are the hilarious, must-see duo of the year in this mother and son road-trip movie that’s sure to have you chuckling. Sit back, put on your seat belt, and laugh.

The Guilt Trip

5 Stars: The perfect movie to see with your mother

Andie Brewster is a good son, even if he did move all the way across the country to get away from his controlling mother, Joyce .

Andie’s dream since he was in grade school was to be an ecologist. Now, having invested every penny he has into a new, environment-friendly cleaning spray, he’s going to pitch his product to outlets such as Costco.

Before Andie starts out on the road from New York, he decides to squeeze in a quick visit with his mom. Well-meaning and loving to a fault, Joyce is beside herself with joy just to be hanging out with her son. But she’s also a master manipulator, the way only moms can be, and makes Andie feel terribly guilty for not spending more time with her.

The Guilt Trip

Widowed now for many years, Joyce has little to occupy her time. Andie urges her to date, and maybe she’ll even fall in love. Joyce confesses that she was in love once, before she married Andie’s father. Then the big shocker:  Andie is even named for this mystery man.

Andie gets an idea — if he could find the mystery man, whose name and company he knows, maybe his mother could rekindle some romance with him all these years later and stop guilt-tripping Andie. After some Googling and phone calls, he locates the man in San Francisco, and the best part is he’s not married.

Without sharing this info with his mom, he invites her to accompany him on his trip. How bad could a week with the woman who birthed him be?

The bickering starts immediately at the rental car office, where Joyce persuades Andie to skip the SUV he reserved and opt for a cheaper subcompact that looks more like a roller skate then an automobile.

Sure enough, it starts to snow and the car breaks down next to a strip club. Luckily, a really sweet and mechanically inclined stripper is able to help out, even offering Andie a lap dance.

The Guilt Trip

The conflict continues to pay off with big laughs, especially when his mother decides to enter a competition to eat a 50-ounce steak in less than an hour.

The screenwriter, Dan Fogelman, based the script on a real-life road trip he took with his mother, creating a warm, loving and incredibly funny homage to her.

What’s lovely about this guilt trip is that in addition to annoying each other, Andie and Joyce get to know each other in a very deep way, each garnering new respect for the other.

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen have incredible comedic chemistry. I can’t imagine any other actors in these roles. Much of the dialogue is improvised and hilarious.

Bottom line: This movie is smart, fun, and relatable — the surprise ending brought tears of joy to my eyes. Enjoy!

Hollywood Heroes we expect to save the world on Dec. 21, 2012

$

In the spirit of Mayan predictions, we've compiled a team of heroes to help us survive the end of the world. Hey, if nothing else, here's a list a movies fit for the occasion.
1

Will Smith

Will Smith

If this epic team of Hollywood Heroes has a captain, we're asking Will Smith to head the operation. It's an obvious fit. Smith and his faithful pup, Sam, kicked serious zombie-butt in the post-apocalyptic world of I Am Legend, and we've seen what he can do against the alien race in Independence Day and the Men In Black films. And let's not forget, should technology go haywire and turn against us, he's already handled all that in I, Robot .

So we've got zombies, aliens and robots somewhat covered, all with the swagger of Smith and his Bad Boys roots.

Who would have thought this fresh prince would grow into such the savior?

2

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson

No doubt there will be room for reconstruction after the world suffers its blows, so we'll need a real innovator on board. We're thinking Mel Gibson is the perfect candidate. Of course, his full resume will come into play, touching specifically on his experiences with aliens in Signs and his assortment of physicality from The Patriot and Lethal Weapon, and all the way to Scotland and back with Braveheart. But the factor we're most banking on is Gibson's Mad Max survival sense.

One rule, Gibson: Keep your religious extremes to yourself in our new world.

3

Milla Jovovich

Milla Jovovich

And let's not forget our leading lady. We're calling in Milla Jovovich, star of the Resident Evil franchise, to help our cause. She's a supermodel with some super combat know-how.

Somebody's got to keep the dudes in check, right?

4

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise also joins the team drawing from his War of the Worlds stint. Surviving the end times sounds a bit like a Mission Impossible of its own, but I think he's got a good track record in that department.

Cruise can fly planes, rappel, even shoot guns — let's just hope the apocalypse doesn't come down to a stone fight, because Cruise can't throw — excuse the pun — to save his life.

Luckily, he's reportedly got his own safehouse and bunker in Telluride, Colorado.

"Tom Cruise reportedly dropped $10 million to build a bunker under his Telluride, Colorado, mansion — just in case," said Yahoo!. "According to Star magazine, the state-of-the-art safe house, featuring a high-tech air-purifying system, was said to have room for 10 people and would have enough supplies and equipment so that they could survive down there for several years."

5

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt

Rounding off the battalion and having just seen the new World War Z trailer, I thought maybe it'd be a good idea to invite Brad Pitt into the picture. His Legends of the Fall mountain man skills will be imperative once our cities are gone and I know all you ladies at home wouldn't mind spending some time with Pitt in the forest.

Plus, it's never a bad day when Tyler Durden is around.

Hey, if the world's ending, things could get real crazy. Maybe even the Ninja Turtles could step up from the gutters and lend a green hand. Or what about Princess Leia? She's got all sorts of cosmic expertise, and I'm sure she's just as anxious about Star Wars: Episode VII as we are. Perhaps, she could even rally Charlie's Angels for a bit of style and nostalgia around the end times.

Guess we'll just wait and see!

Monsters, Inc movie review: The perfect holiday treat

Adding 3-D technology to this classic Pixar movie makes a wonderful holiday gift. A whole new generation will discover the fun of Sulley and Mike Wazowski.

Monsters, Inc.

4 Stars: Perfect for kids of all ages

Sulley and Mike Wazowski are two gleeful monsters who work to collect children’s screams to power the town of Monstropolis. Each unique, animal-inspired beastie is assigned to a child and given access to the child’s bedroom door.

Superb at their job, the tables turn on Sulley and Mike Wazowski when Boo , a darling little tyke who communicates with adorable squawks and mumbles, toddles into the monster factory.

Having been taught that humans are highly toxic if touched by a monster, Sulley worries about the girl’s fate if she’s caught by the Child Detection Agency, a team of faceless workers who trample around in haz-mat suits carrying high-powered vacuums.

Meanwhile, Mike Wazowski pursues an office romance with receptionist Celia , a pretty Cyclops whose hair is made of a dozen snakes. But Wazowski is forced to abandon Celia at a sushi restaurant to help his best buddy Sulley hide Boo and hopefully return her to her home.

It’s easy to understand why Sulley feels so protective of Boo, who was animated with the frenetic energy unique to two-year-olds. She bounces, bops and bounds about tirelessly, curious about the new world around her. Pixar masterfully captures the spirit of being in the presence of a toddler.

Randall Boggs is delightful as the conniving chameleon-type monster, who has the ability to turn invisible, making for a number of fun comedic bits. He’s jealous of Sulley’s top-ranking success as a "scarer" and decides to undermine him.

These monsters are actually quite cute and cuddly and shouldn't be too scary for even your littlest ones.

Bottom line: Sulley and Wazowski are the two most lovable monsters ever animated and the 3-D is a fun addition to this classic cartoon.

Director Anne Fletcher calls The Guilt Trip her “love letter to moms”

It’s the ultimate mommy-date movie of the season: The Guilt Trip. Director Anne Fletcher tells us where she got her hilarious ideas for Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen’s mother-son duo.

Guilt Trip poster

The Guilt Trip director Anne Fletcher really loves her mom. So much so that she brought her mom along for our recent interview about her new mommy dramedy.

"She loved the movie," Anne told SheKnows as she looked over at her mother who had flown in from Detroit to support her daughter. "I see it as a love letter to moms in a sense, because they are crazy, and wild and out of their minds. But at the end of the day, they’re your mom. They’re just crazy but they mean well."

WATCH OUR INTERVIEW WITH ANNE

The Guilt Trip director Anne Fletcher interview

SheKnows Correspondent Whitney English interviews The Guilt Trip director Anne Fletcher about the movie and why Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen made a great pair.

Fletcher drew ideas for her characters Andy and his mom Joyce from experiences with her own mom.

“It’s based on the relationship with my mother," said Fletcher. The story follows Joyce and Andy as they embark on a road trip to sell a new product he has developed. Along the way she repeatedly nags her son and gives him unsolicited advice. Despite Joyce ultimately being right, the bickering produces several funny — and also emotional — scenes between the two.

"[Joyce] has so many suggestions that no one has asked for, which I think most mothers do, and they’re mostly right," said Fletcher. "It’s a mom thing."

And Barbra and Seth made a very convincing mother and son, probably because Barbra was motherly toward Seth off-camera as well!

"It was an instinct thing," said Fletcher. "Their chemistry was instantaneous. I think Barbra is maternal to anyone. And Seth is such a sweet, and kind and generous person, that you just can’t help it. Barbra just can’t help being mom on and off camera."

Hugh Jackman in X-Men

X-Men: Days of Future Past has turned into a real reunion. First, original director Matthew Vaughn dropped out, leaving producer Bryan Singer to take his place. Singer then announced that several stars from the previous trilogy would be joining the cast.

It's been confirmed that Sir Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart are set to reprise their roles as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier. There also was talk of Hugh Jackman returning as everyone's favorite clawed mutant, Wolverine.

Is Hugh Jackman up for the next X-Men?>>

Thanks to a tweet from Singer, there's no doubt about it — Wolvie is back!

Singer wrote, "I would officially like to welcome @RealHughJackman to the cast of #Xmen Days of Future Past. Very excited! More to come..."

X Men: Days of Future Past is a follow-up to 2011's X-Men: First Class. Essentially, it's a prequel to the X-Men films that ran from 2000 to 2006. The new story and title are taken from a popular arc in the comic books. It includes time travel and alternate dimensions, which makes it easy to feature various characters from the franchise.

McKellen and Stewart will share their roles with Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, who play younger versions of their characters. There's also been talk of stars Halle Berry and James Marsden returning as Ororo Munroe/Storm and Scott Summers/Cyclops respectively.

Singer did say there was more to come. Do we smell another casting announcement?

Jackman's spinoff The Wolverine hits theaters July 26, 2013, while X-Men: Days of Future Past debuts on July 18, 2014.

To stay in power you've got to keep the competition down. That's where ex-cop Billy Taggart came in: He'd carry out the dirty work so the New York City mayor could rest comfortably at the top — hence the name Broken City. The metropolis is immersed in corruption and greed, but the biggest scandal has to do with Mayor Hostetler himself.

It was a simple objective. Taggart was supposed to track down and discover the identity of the man who was sleeping with the mayor's wife , hand over the photographic evidence and the deed was done.

Or so he thought.

When the hunter becomes the hunted, Wahlberg does what Wahlberg does best. Redemption and revenge is his only answer and Mayor Hostetler had better watch his back.

From the looks of the new trailer above, this thing is chock-full of love, lust, power, deception and a lot of violence. And in a Departed-esque game of betrayal and survival, only one man can land on top.

Watch the action unfold Jan. 18, 2013.

Mark Wahlberg flexes his muscles in Michael Bay's Pain & Gain. The Oscar-nominated actor headlines the new film, alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. There are tank tops, spandex and barbells galore.

Mark Wahlberg

In Hollywood, being in shape is mandatory. Actors go above and beyond to look great 24/7. Earlier this year, Mark Wahlberg took his dedication to a whole new level. The actor shot Michael Bay's latest film, Pain & Gain, and put on an obscene amount of muscle.

The film takes place in the world of fitness. Wahlberg and his pals, played by Anthony Mackie and Dwayne Johnson, are bodybuilder types. Johnson, a professional wrestler, is always in fighting shape. But Wahlberg and Mackie really had to pack on the pounds.

Pain & Gain is based on a true story about three personal trainers from Miami. It's set in the mid-1990s and follows them as they get caught in a heist gone wrong. They desperately want to live the American dream, but go about it the wrong way. It's unfortunate for them, but good entertainment for us.

Mark Wahlberg confirmed as next Transformers star>>

Supposedly this film got Wahlberg interested in Transformers 4. After having such a great time working with Bay, he decided to do it again. Production on the robot sequel is slated to begin next May. To date, Transformers is one of the highest-grossing franchises of all-time.

Anchorman 2 gets a release date and a possible new co-star

Anchorman came out in 2004, and fans have been waiting since then to see the second one. It looks like the wait is almost over.

Will Ferrell

The second Anchorman just got one step closer to reality. The much-awaited sequel is a long time coming, and when it is released, it will end up being out almost 10 years after the first one.

The studio announced today that Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues will be out Dec. 20, 2013, and it will include some familiar faces.

“The movie reunites the principals of the first movie — Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, and Christina Applegate on top of [Will] Ferrell — in more newsrooms hijinks,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. “Adam McKay is back as director.”

The first film was released July 9, 2004, and earned almost $91 million worldwide — not bad for a film with a $26 million production budget.

“It received a big boost on DVD, becoming ingrained in pop culture,” said THR.

The new sequel may also have a new face. According to TheWrap.com, Kristen Wiig is reportedly in talks to join the cast for the second film.

“Wiig would play opposite Steve Carell, as a love interest in the sequel,” The Wrap reported. “The script is still being written, and no cast beyond the principals has been set.”

Wiig is currently without a job, since she left her position on Saturday Night Live after last season.

“Best known for her work on Saturday Night Live, Wiig is one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, since appearing in the film Bridesmaids,” according to the website. “She could recently be seen at the Toronto International Film Festival in the indie feature Imogene, and has been busy filming a number of titles, including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Hateship Friendship, with Guy Pearce.”

The film is added to the list of numerous anticipated films to hit the theaters during the holiday season next year. Even with a lower budget, it’s set to be a fierce competitor.

This Is 40 gun joke to stay: Judd Apatow explains why

While songs, film premieres and more are getting cut or changed in the wake of the school shootings in Connecticut, This Is 40 is staying intact. Writer and director Judd Apatow explains why a game of "murder" is staying in.

When This Is 40 opens in theaters on Friday, movie-goers will take in a scene where a father jokingly plays "murder" with his toddlers.

Despite many songs being pulled from the radio and movie premieres being postponed in the wake of the Connecticut school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, This Is 40 writer and director Judd Apatow says changes to his film won't be made.

The scene in question involves Albert Brooks' character Larry explaining to Paul Rudd how stressed out he is trying afford his three young sons, who are triplets.

Joking that he's going to save money by thinning out the number of mouths to feed, Brooks' character tells the kids, "Line up! Line up for murder! Come on! Who wants to be killed?"

Naturally, each of the blond-headed toddlers squeals with glee to be "murdered" with a squirt from the garden hose. He then says, "Boom, dead. You're dead. All right, the kids are murdered. That will save us some money."

Speaking to TMZ, Judd Apatow explained the scene "is spoken by a sarcastic father kidding with his children."

The 45-year-old, previously named to Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Smartest People in Hollywood, continued, "In light of recent events, I understand if some people might make an unfortunate association or put it in a context in which it was not intended."

TMZ reports the script was written two years ago, but it remains to be seen if keeping that particular scene in the film is such a smart move.

Do you think Judd Apatow made the right call on the This Is 40 gun joke?

Angelina Jolie set to direct World War II-era film

It looks like the actress is directing more and more films, and her next one will be a true story that is almost too incredible to believe. But with kids, a husband and multiple movies in the works, how does she fit one more thing into her schedule?

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is set to add one more title to her directing credits. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she is in talks to direct Unbroken, a film based on the bestselling book by Laura Hillenbrand. The book spent 108 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list.

“In her life and in her work, Angelina has embraced stories and causes involving great struggle and triumph over tremendous odds and the basic human condition,” said Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley with Universal Pictures. “She has a real ability to illustrate the strength in human spirit, which will be essential in telling Lou’s story of survival and great heroism.”

Jolie’s name didn’t randomly appear on the list of possible directors — she said she had her eye on the film since the very beginning.

"I read Laura Hillenbrand's brilliant book, and I was so moved by Louie Zamperini's heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make this film," Jolie said in a statement to MTV. "Louie is a true hero and a man of immense humanity, faith and courage. I am deeply honored to have the chance to tell his inspiring story."

The film will follow Zamperini from success to devastation in a short amount of time, and Jolie feels she can show that struggle.

“Zamperini was a track prodigy who traveled to Berlin in 1936 for the Olympics at age 19, and though he didn't medal, his speedy final lap in the 5,000 meter race so impressed Adolf Hitler that the German dictator requested a personal meeting with the runner,” said MTV. “He enlisted in the Air Force in September 1941 and in April 1942 his plane went down in the ocean, killing eight of the 11 men on board.”

Jolie also directed In the Land of Blood and Honey, a 2011 film about life during the Bosnian war of the 1990s. This story is similar in that it follows a personal struggle, much of it internal.

“The survivors lived on rain water and raw fish, and survived a bombing by a Japanese airplane before Zamperini, now 96, and another man, Russell Phillips, reached the Marshall Islands and were captured by the Japanese Navy and held in captivity until August 1945,” said MTV.

Yay! Affleck and Stewart won't make out on film!

Ben Affleck, formerly attached to Kristen Stewart's con artist film Focus, has had to withdraw. We're relieved we won't have to see Affleck getting intimate with a girl half his age.

Kristen Stewart close up

Kristen Stewart's going to have to learn the art of the grift from some other older guy — Ben Affleck has dropped out of her next project, Focus.

Affleck named scheduling issues as the reason, and though both Stewart and Affleck are massively talented, really, we're breathing a sigh of relief.

Why? Because Focus, a "sexy comedy" about an experienced grifter who takes a young supplicant under his wing, apparently calls for the pair to roll around in bed a lot.

Affleck is 40. Stewart is 22. He's old enough to be her dad, guh-ross.

Of course, movie May-December romances are nothing new. We're used to watching grizzled older actors like Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones get routinely paired with actresses decades younger than them.

Kristen Stewart's co-stars talk "uncomfortable" sex scenes >>

But Affleck, who has a nice-guy rep and an age-appropriate wife, and small children, would just look more disappointingly skeevy when paired with a young'un like Stewart.

It's worth noting that Focus scribes Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who also wrote Crazy, Stupid, Love, cast Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as the main love interests in that movie. Gosling was then 30, Stone 22, and the age difference between them was never mentioned at all.

Stewart is still said to be firmly attached to Focus, and a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman is also said to be in her future.

Wonder what middle-age guy they will get to show her the ropes in Focus. How about Russell Crowe? No one thinks he's a nice guy.
